KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapim) has called on the Palestine Authority to come clean on the failure of a project to implement hospital and clinic health facilities in Gaza.
Its president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said the Palestine embassy in Kuala Lumpur must explain the reason behind the failure for the project to take off despite the US$1 million donation made by Malaysia through the embassy last year.
The Health Ministry in Ramallah is said to have cancelled the project as the money from Malaysia did not reach them a year after the agreement was inked.
"We were shocked to hear the news that the Gaza authorities did not receive Malaysia's aid for the project to rebuild the health facilities there which were destroyed due to the Israeli attack in 2021.
"The Palestinian Authority must be transparent to explain this as it involves the interests of the Palestinian people in Gaza as well as those from Malaysia who contributed.
"They must explain where the US$1 million was used," he said in a statement today.
It was reported that Malaysia had pledged over US$1 million in aid as part of an ongoing effort to rebuild medical facilities following an attack which killed over 260 Palestinians, including dozens of children.
Previously, the Palestine embassy complained that Malaysia did not supply aid to Gaza through them.
The role of non-governmental organisations which collected donations for Gaza was also questioned although they have provided evidence of projects done there with the funds.
Azmi said the image of the NGOs had been affected ever since the claims were made by the Palestine embassy.
"With the recent revelations that Malaysian money did not reach Ramallah and Gaza through the Palestine embassy, our question is who will be responsible with the project that did not proceed as it should have?
"The Malaysian government must question this to the embassy and demand for answers," he added.
