Tuan Ibrahim: Simultaneous state elections can prevent prolonged politicking

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas agrees with the proposal to simultaneously hold state elections in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, Penang and Selangor, saying it is a good move to prevent prolonged politicking in the country.

Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the matter would be discussed at the party and PN levels to get a consensus on the matter.

"I agree that state elections should be held simultaneously so that all the politicking does not drag on," he told Berita Harian today.

He said in the future, it would be better to hold all elections on the same day across the country.

"But state assemblies can be dissolved on different dates."

Yesterday, Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said six states had expressed readiness to dissolve their state assemblies simultaneously to make way for state elections.

But whether this can be done depends on the ruling parties and coalitions of each state.

Yesterday, the Election Commission said state elections in the six states would cost about RM450 million.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh hoped the six state elections could be held simultaneously as it would ease preparations and coordination for the commission.

Only Perlis, Pahang and Perak dissolved their state assemblies to hold state elections concurrently with the 15th General Election on Nov 19.
