KUALA LUMPUR: A holiday turned tragic for more than 20 teachers from Mun Choong Chinese Primary School and their family members who decided to camp in Gohtong Jaya when a landslide hit.
Head of the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), U Chin Ong said more than 20 teachers and their families had been camping at the hilltop since Wednesday for a three-day trip.
"There are about two to four teachers who are currently at this refuge center at Hulu Yam Bharu police station. Some are being treated at Hospital Kuala Lumpur for minor injuries.
"I am also waiting for more information as there are still more being rescued and identified.
He said that the landslide actually happened on the opposite side of the camp which the campers initially thought was safe but then the landslide affected their area as well.
Ong said that he bought some milk for the babies and children of the teachers.
The Social Welfare Department provided basic necessities like clothes, slippers, diapers, and food for landslide survivors as well.
Medical aid was provided by Hospital Kuala Lumpur to the survivors by checking their blood pressure and wounds.
As of now a total of 52 people were rescued from the camping ground at Gohtong Jaya and are seeking refuge at Hulu Yam Bharu Police Station, Batang Kali.
This was after a one-acre wide landslide cascaded into the campground this morning.
Rescue operations are still ongoing to identify any new casualties. According to the latest report, 13 victims were found dead, and more are still being identified and rescued.
