JERTIH: The government will consider building houses based on the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) concept for victims who lost homes due to the floods.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said this was part of the government's efforts to help disaster victims.
He said this is being discussed with Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB), which is owned by the Minister of Finance (Incorporated).
"I will check with SPNB to get the necessary data and see what kind of assistance can be rendered to ease the building and reconstruction of such homes.
"However, the houses will not be free. The cost will be affordable, with a substantial subsidy.
"The RMR will have a special design that will be built by local contractors, priced at RM70,000 to RM80,000," he said after presenting food aid and assistance to 200 flood victims at SK Kampung La here today.
Ahmad also visited homes that were destroyed by floods.
Ahmad said requirements must be met before the RMR can be built, such as villagers owning the site for the home or obtaining permission from other owners of the land if it is not owned by one individual.
The major floods that hit Terengganu from Dec 18 has displaced more than 40,000 people.
The floods affected more than 1,000 Kampung La villagers, with some losing their homes after they were swept away by strong currents.
