KUALA LUMPUR: Former TV host Datin Seri Haflin Saiful Azhar is now chairman of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Ladies' Association (Perwakilan) in Washington DC.
This, following the appointment of her husband Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, a former Padang Rengas member of parliament, as Malaysia's next envoy to the United States.
"Congratulations to Datin Seri Haflin Saiful Azhar, the new Washington DC Perwakilan chairman.
"All the best in carrying out duties and trust in leading Perwakilan in Washington DC," wrote @perwakilan_kl in an Instagram post.
Another 11 congratulatory posts were also posted by @perwakilan_kl to congratulate other new Perwakilan chairmen in various countries.
On Thursday, Wisma Putra in a statement announced Nazri's appointment.
However, many had questioned his appointment, among them ex-diplomats, Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin and Datuk Dennis Ignatius, who described it as a very bad judgment and a disappointment.
Noor Farida, the former ambassador to the Netherlands, was quoted by a local portal as saying that it was unfair and demoralising to career diplomats to be denied the opportunity to be promoted as an ambassador.
Ignatius, a former Malaysian high commissioner to Canada, responded succinctly by saying: "Day by day, the PM (Anwar Ibrahim) disappoints."
