Police to call in Muhyiddin over alleged slanderous statement against Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will summon Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over allegations he had slandered Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Putrajaya police chief Assistant Commissioner A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said investigators were currently in the process of calling in Muhyiddin and other witnesses to the alleged incident.

"Investigations are ongoing and efforts to contact Tan Sri Muhyiddin and several other witnesses are being carried out.

"There are some who have already been contacted while others have not... at present, many are involved in the current Parliament meeting," he said.

Yesterday, Asmadi had said police had opened an investigation paper into the case under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, which is a criminal offence here.

He had said the investigation came about following a report lodged by the political secretary to the finance minister, PKR deputy Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.

The report was in connection with a video clip, which had gone viral on social media, in which Muhyiddin was said to have made defamatory statements against Anwar.

Asmadi had said the 11-minute, 11-second clip was taken after Muhyiddin was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex with several counts of graft and money laundering in connection with the Jana Wibawa programme scandal.

Muhyiddin had reportedly said that the court case against him was influenced by "political hands".

In his police report, Kamil had claimed that Muhyiddin's statement was meant to insinuate that Anwar was the "political hand" behind the charges against him, so as to create a negative perception of the prime minister.

Apart from defamation, investigations are also being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
