Bung Moktar calls on Sabah govt to approve construction of Mazu statue

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah deputy chief minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has called on the state government to approve the construction of the Mazu statue (Goddess of Sea) in Kudat.

He believes the project would boost the state's tourism sector and provide economic benefits to the local community.

"Similar constructions have been carried out in other states, including Kelantan and Penang, without issue of affecting the lives of the Muslim community," he said in a statement.

The project was initially proposed 20 years ago by then state tourism, culture and environment minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, but was halted following opposition from some non-governmental organisations, including the Sabah Islamic Organisation.

Recently, state Tourism Minister Datuk Christina Liew visited the site and expressed hope that the government would give approval to revive the project.

Bung Moktar, who is also state Barisan Nasional chairman, believes the 33-metre-tall Mazu statue could become an icon of Kudat district and attract tourists.

The Kinabatangan member of parliament cited in China, millions of tourists visited the Mazu statue on the mainland, and believes Sabah could also enjoy a similar experience.

He stated that the project could also stimulate the production of food and handicraft products, which could be sold to foreign tourists.

"This would not only benefit local businesses, but also generate income for the community."

Bung Moktar said he understood the construction of the project would not obstruct the position or view of the existing district mosque.

He emphasised that any conflict regarding the project could be resolved amicably for the benefit of the people of Kudat and its economy.

Therefore, he hoped the state government would consider approving the project and put aside any narrow sentiments that could hinder the concept of Sabah Maju Jaya.
