KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his commitment to solve Kelantan and Sabah water woes.
Anwar said he would invite Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to meet him in the next two weeks to find a definitive solution, even if it involves billions of ringgit.
"I was in Kelantan recently and the water issue is severe. In Sandakan, they are drinking salt water.
"Within two weeks, I will meet the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Sabah Chief Minister along with their team to find a way to solve the issue even if we need billions of ringgit.
"Don't delay until next week. We will try to solve it now. We can postpone big projects but not issues involving water, electricity, potholes, dilapidated schools and clinics especially in Sabah," he said during the Unity Government convention at World Trade Centre here today.
Anwar said it's important that the rakyat is not be burdened and insulted when there's no clean water to drink after 60 years of independence.
However, Kelantan and Sabah are not the only states facing water woes as Anwar claimed Kedah is also facing the same predicament.
Anwar had instead sneered Menteri Besar Kedah Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for being arrogant and not wanting to solve the issue.
"There's also no water in Kedah. When he (Sanusi) talks, he talks as if they can solve everything.
"At least the Kelantan Menteri Besar is ready to negotiate. People who are arrogant should be left alone with their arrogance and pride," he said.
