Local author launches interactive children's book to promote Sabah's culture

PENAMPANG: Local author Fariza Sakina Farish has launched an interactive children's book titled 'A Tale From Tuaran: Tales For Our Tiny Tribes'.

Going beyond the ordinary, the publication serves as both a storybook and an activity book, immersing young readers in an interactive experience focusing around Fariza's hometown, Tuaran district.

The book features captivating illustrations that bring to life the enchanting folklore tales passed down by Fariza's grandmother.

Adding to its allure, the book includes a colouring section designed to unleash children's creativity while taking them on a magical journey through the cultural stories.

"I hope that this publication would inspire children and adults alike to appreciate and cherish our unique culture," said Fariza.

Her dedication to storytelling extends beyond Tuaran, as she envisions writing more children's books based on different districts, shining a light on Sabah's diverse narratives and encouraging their appreciation.

In conjunction with the ongoing Kaamatan Festival, Fariza released and sold her first batch of books at the KDCA Hongkod Koisaan from May 30 to 31.

During the event, she presented her book to state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun also expressed admiration for her works.

Joniston who is also Sabah Tourism Board chairman commended Fariza for her commitment to preserving local tales through storytelling, emphasising the importance of preserving and sharing cultural heritage for future generations.

"I urge young individuals to take inspiration from Fariza's work and contribute to preserving and promoting our local folklore.

"Through her efforts, she not only introduces young readers to the captivating tales from the many ethnic groups but inspires them to explore and appreciate their cultural roots," he said.

The book 'A Tale From Tuaran' is available for purchase at RM60 via the Instagram account @borneanbubbas, with 10 percent of all profits going to Seratu Aatai's Borneo Pygmy Elephant conservation efforts.
