KLANG: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has consented to the dissolution of the state legislative assembly this Friday to pave the way for elections in the state.

The ruler's private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani announced this in a simple ceremony at Balai Dewan Diraja, Istana Alam Shah earlier today.

Sultan Sharafuddin had signed the proclamation of the dissolution at the palace on Monday.

The first meeting of the Selangor state assembly after the 14th general election (GE14) was held on June 26, 2018.

The state Pakatan Harapan, then led by Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, retained power in GE14 with a two-thirds majority, winning 51 of the 56 state seats.

He was then sworn in as menteri besar for a second term on May 11, 2018, before resigning to take up the post of economic affairs minister under the administration of then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

PH then selected one of the state executive councillors Amirudin, as the 16th Selangor Menteri Besar and he was sworn in on June 19, 2018.

PH retained three of the seats but lost Semenyih to Barisan Nasional (BN).

In the state assembly, PH has 40 seats (PKR-19, DAP-15, Amanah-six); BN six, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia four, Parti Bangsa Malaysia two; while Pas, Pejuang and Warisan have one each and there is one independent assemblyman.

Selangor is among six states holding elections this year.

The others are Negri Sembilan, Pulau Pinang, Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu.

Kelantan will dissolve its state legislative assembly on Thursday, Penang on June 28 and Negri Sembilan on June 30.
