PAGOH: A father threw his two young sons from the upper floor of a shophouse in Pekan Lenga, Bukit Kepong near here in a desperate attempt to save them after they were trapped in a fire.
In the 4.30am incident, Zamirul Suahimi, 30, threw his sons Muhammad Firas Syahmi, 10, and Muhammad Harith, four, from the upper floor of the shophouse.
The two boys were caught by factory workers downstairs who just so happened to be at the scene.
However, Zamirul, who jumped off the same floor after throwing his sons down, ended up injuring his hand as it hit a zinc structure. He also suffered burns to his ear, eyelid and mouth as well as swelling around his neck.
Speaking about what happened, Zamirul's wife, S'biha Bahari, 39, said that before the incident happened, she tried to contact her husband but to no avail.
"Not long after, the two factory workers answered my husband's phone and informed me that the restaurant that we owned had caught fire.
"It has become a norm for my husband and our children to sleep at the shop because he will get up early in the morning to prepare and cook breakfast. I, on the other hand, slept at my mother's house, which is not far away from our restaurant.
"My husband got up when he heard screams before he decided to throw our children from the top floor of the shophouse to keep them from harm's way," she said.
According to S'biha, Zamirul is currently being treated at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar.
In the incident, 10 shophouses made up of a sundry shop, two motorcycle shops, a home appliances shop, and a house ended up in flames.
