Mitra empowers Malaysian Indian community with a slew of initiatives

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) has rolled out several initiatives and programmes to enhance the community's wellbeing.

Mitra Special Committee chairman Datuk R. Ramanan said the programmes would also focus on education and higher education aid, career and entrepreneurship, as well as social wellbeing.

He added that the unit would also subsidise10,000 undergraduate students in their second, third and final year of studies.

"Mitra has received 5,000 applications, which is expected to increase soon. The subsidy will also be channelled in phases to the students starting August.

"The applications will be (processed) on a 'first come, first serve' basis and is expected to ease students' financial burdens," he said in a statement today.

He added that Mitra would also disburse RM24.9 million in subsidies to preschoolers. Of the total, he said the agreement for the first group involving 42 kindergartens (1,035 children) had been signed by the unit.

"Another RM5,095,200 subsidy will be disbursed for the second group involving 71 kindergartens (2,123 children) after the agreement is signed on July 27."

He added that a joint initiative between the unit and Weststar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd for 100 Indian youths on aircraft maintenance had also been carried out.

"Applications are open on July 26 until Aug 30. The youths will be trained to be certified technicians with qualifications and licences from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia.

"A work opportunity is also guaranteed after the training period."
