KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reiterated his vow to end poverty issues in the country by this year.
In his keynote address during the 11th International Tamil Conference held at Universiti Malaya today, Anwar said the government would focus on the Malay and Indian communities, who were mainly in the low-income bracket.low-income bracket.
"I have also given a clear message that no one in the country should find it hard to feed their babies or provide uniforms for their school-going children.
"Hence, I believe that it is our moral responsibility as Malaysians, as well as my position as the prime minister, to deal with the issue regardless of their race, either as Malays or Indians," he said.
Anwar also reminded Malaysians to steer clear of racism and reject any efforts by certain quarters that could cause friction among various races in the country.
He added that a clear message to rebuke those who wanted to 'hijack' and change the course of Malaysia must also be delivered.
"If we can overcome these hurdles, God Willing, we will have a better Malaysia.
"I will also continue to support this cause, regardless of race. Alhamdulillah, if you support it. But if not, I will accept it without sacrificing my principles.
"This country is for everyone, and we must overcome the challenges along the way."
