KUALA LUMPUR: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) is investigating the operation of four illegal drones during the state election's nomination process yesterday.
In a statement today, CAAM chief executive officer Captain Norazman Mahmud said all drones were seized and the four pilots involved were detained by the police.
"Among the four cases reported, one has resulted in an unfortunate incident involving an agricultural drone that crashed and injured a civilian. The victim was then brought to the hospital for further treatment.
"Following this, CAAM is currently investigating the case, in accordance with the Civil Aviation Regulations (CVR) 2016 under Section 325 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing grievous hurt," the statement read.
He said those found guilty could face imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both.
He also reminded the public that operations of drones were strictly prohibited throughout the 14-day campaigning period, which started from the nomination day yesterday to early voting day on Aug 8 and election day on Aug 12.
"Any illegal and unauthorised drone activity that may cause danger to the public or property is a violation to regulations under section 4 of the Civil Aviation Act 1969, Regulation 140-144 of the CVR 2016 and other relevant Civil Aviation Directives (CAD) issued by CAAM."
These are in pursuant to section 240 of the Civil Aviation Act 1969 and those found guilty face a fine or imprisonment as stipulated by the law.
