IIUM students, NGOs rally in solidarity with Palestinians

KUALA LUMPUR: International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) students and three non-governmental organisations voiced their solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza today.

They held a rally in response to the government's call to continue supporting and assisting the Palestinian people.

Palestine Solidarity March chief organiser Ahmad Luthfi, 23, said the rally began as a student movement but, surprisingly, received support from the NGOs.

"When Aman Palestin, Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia and the Palestine Students Association (PSA) heard about it, they decided to help by sending manpower and props.

"I sincerely hope that this is not just seasonal and that we will continue this spirit in the days to come."

IIUM Student Union president Ahmad Muntasir, 22, said the rally was attended by more than 500 students, including Palestinian students who also expressed their grievances and concerns for their homeland.

"We organised it in IIUM because we have many international friends (from Palestine), and they wanted to convey their voices on behalf of their people.

"This will further boost the sense of community among the students, not only within our institution but also in other universities," said Muntasir.
