GEORGE TOWN: Three teachers and staff of SMK Seri Bayu in Teluk Kumbar here were affected when a bottle of nitric acid spilled in the school laboratory this morning.
Seri Balik Pulau fire and rescue station operations commander Rohaizal Abdul Aziz said the victims, aged between 32 and 44, were taken to hospital for examination and further treatment.
"The affected victims were neutralised using water and taken to the hospital for further action.
"Although they did not experience serious symptoms, they are still undergoing further examination," he said today.
Elaborating, Rohaizal said they received an emergency call at 10.16am regarding the incident.
"When the fire and rescue team arrived at the scene, we found a bottle of nitric acid had spilled in the school's laboratory and there were three female victims, who had been contaminated.
"The Hazmat Unit team carried out the decontamination of the acid using 'Soda Ash' and 'Chemical Binder' in the laboratory," he added.
He added that the operation, which was also assisted by the police and the volunteer fire brigade, ended at 12.59pm.
