Acid-attack victim Faisal feels good to be listed in Selangor team

KUALA LUMPUR: Faisal Halim said being named as a reserve player in the Selangor team for the first time yesterday for a FA Cup match has uplifted his spirit since the horrifying acid attack on him nearly three months ago.

To the surprise and excitement of fans, winger Faisal was on the pitch warming up for the FA Cup semi-final second leg against Terengganu at MBPJ Stadium.

Prior to his "bench appearance" yesterday, Faisal, 26, had been in the grandstands, cheering his teammates during Super League and FA Cup matches.

Faisal said he has resumed training and is optimistic about a full recovery. The Selangor star suffered fourth-degree burns after he was splashed with acid by an unknown assailant at a shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur on May 5.

Though Faisal was on the bench and did not take to the field against Terengganu, his mere presence was enough to inspire a 4-1 win for Selangor. They advanced to the FA Cup final with a 6-4 aggregate win.

Faisal expressed deep satisfaction at being involved with his Super League team again. "It's been nearly three months since the attack, and while I'm still on the mend, being back at MBPJ Stadium tonight has truly lifted my spirit," he said after the match.

"Although I wasn't able to play, I want to congratulate my teammates and all the Selangor supporters. This win is for everyone. I'm here to bring whatever positive energy I can, even if I'm not fully fit yet.

"I was caught off guard to be listed as a substitute. I only found out yesterday, but I'm happy to contribute in any way I can, even from the sidelines," added Faisal.

Selangor coach Nidzam Jamil said: "I felt that Faisal deserved a spot in the final 20-player squad because he has been training with us for the past two weeks.

"If you were in my shoes and Faisal Halim is available, would you leave him out or put him on the bench?" added Nidzam.
