PUTRAJAYA: Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said Malaysia is expected to generate RM2.3 billion from 2024 to 2026, especially with Melaka hosting World Tourism Day (WTD) in 2025.
Today, Tiong chaired the kickoff meeting to prepare for WTD and World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025, with representatives from the Melaka state government attending to discuss the action plan of the appointed Special Committee.
"From 2024 to 2026, Malaysia is set to host over 156 international business events and conferences; With a high multiplier effect, it is expected to generate an economic impact of RM2.3 billion," he said.
He said Melaka has been assigned to organise WTD, synchronising with the state's plan to host the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) International Triennial WTC in 2025.
"These programmes are expected to gather over 3,000 participants from 159 member countries, including around 500 private sector UNWTO members, Tourism Ministers, National Tourism Organisation Heads, and global tourism industry figures.
"The selection of Melaka as the host for WTD and WTC 2025 signifies recognition of the state government's commitment and leadership in driving tourism development, successfully establishing Melaka as a renowned tourist destination globally," he said.
Tiong said the event's preparation is part of Malaysia's efforts towards implementing the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
Also present, Melaka Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the state is honoured for the opportunity to host both international events in 2025.
"Everyone is well aware that Melaka is recognised as a tourist city and a heritage city by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
"There are many tourism-related contents that Melaka can provide, attracting and captivating more who come.
"With the organisation of Visit Melaka Year in 2024 and followed by the WTD and WTC in 2025, it will demonstrate that besides the contributions of incoming investments, the tourism industry can also contribute to the people's economy in a better condition," he said.
Both the internationally acclaimed event – the WTD and WTC 2025 are scheduled for Sep 27-29, 2025.
