PUTRAJAYA: The government will find a mechanism to speed up the implementation of the proposal to automatically upgrade the B2 class motorcycle driving licence to a B licence.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said among the requirements being considered are for the applicant to be 35 and above and must hold a B2 licence for a certain period.
"This matter will be finalised during a detailed meeting between the Road Transport Department (RTD) and Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT)," he told reporters after attending an engagement session with the Malaysian Motorcycle Association today.
Present was Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah. Asked about the timeframe for the matter to be decided, Zahid replied; "We leave it to the minister (Loke)."
In August last year, Zahid said the proposal for an automatic upgrade from B2 class to B licence would be brought to the Transport Ministry for initial examination.
RTD classifies class B2 driving licence for motorcycles not exceeding 250 cc while class B involves motorcycles exceeding 500 cc.
Meanwhile, earlier Loke when answering a question posed by a participant on the matter said; "To upgrade to a B licence is not easy as JSPT's statistics show that most road accidents involve those aged between 16 and 35.
"A person who just got a B2 license and then was given a B licence, will act arbitrarily. However, if he is slightly older, he might be more experienced besides having responsibilities to his family and so on," said Loke.
