Five victims buried in Cameron Highlands landslide from Myanmar

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The landslide incident which occurred at Kampung Batu 59, Kampung Raja here early today, involved five foreigners from Myanmar.

They have been identified as Shing Lan Har, 56; Shing Aung, 39; Om Myue, 38; Haphey, 36 and Thang Moung, 25.

As of 10am today, only one body has been retrieved from the rubble.

A statement from the Cameron Highlands District Disaster Management Agency Committee said that Cameron Highlands district police were alerted to the incident at 2.10am.

The statement said five victims were buried under the landslide including a woman.

"Following this report, a rescue team was rushed to the scene to conduct inspections to coordinate search and rescue operations.

"The results of the inspection found that the scene of the incident had been cut off and a four-wheel vehicle was needed to get to the scene of the incident.

"The rescue team immediately started a search and rescue operation and a male victim was found at 3am," the statement said.

The statement added that as of 9am today, the operation was still ongoing to find another four victims with the help of police, the army and Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM).

"People are urged not to speculate on the incident and those who with information can channel them to our operation centre at 05-491 5999 or the nearest police station," the statement said.
