KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia today warned that he would not entertain bids from any quarters who wish to jeopardise the country's political stability.
In his royal address at the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament, His Majesty said all quarters must respect the administration of the unity government that was formed after the 15th General Election (GE15) in 2022.
He also said that any quarters who wish to play politics must also wait for the right time, such as the next election period, GE16.
"I would like to remind you that this Parliament is the place where laws are enacted and that members of Parliament (MPs) are the legislators.
"Therefore, it will be inconceivable if the MPs themselves do not comply with the rules they have made.
"Accordingly, I also hope that all MPs will set a good example and abide by the rules throughout the proceedings in this August House," His Majesty said.
This is His Majesty's first time opening the Dewan Rakyat since being appointed as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in January, this year.
His Majesty's arrival was welcomed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, both Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul as well as Dewan Negara President Datuk Mutang Tagal.
Sultan Ibrahim also called upon both government and opposition blocs to remain united and work together to develop Malaysia for the benefit of the people.
This, His Majesty said, was as the success or failure of the country does not solely depend on the shoulders of the Prime Minister, but also on the responsibility of all 222 MPs elected by the people.
"Therefore, I urge all parties, whether seated to my right or my left, let us be united, work together and collaborate to develop the country for the benefit of all Malaysians.
"In my view, the success or failure of our country does not rest solely on the shoulders of the Prime Minister but is the responsibility of all 222 MPs who have been entrusted by the people to represent them in the government.
"All parties should be aware that the well-being of more than 33 million Malaysians is my utmost priority.
"Therefore, I hope that all MPs will focus their efforts on safeguarding the people."
The third session of the 15th Parliament commenced today and will run until March 27.
The 19-day session which was graced by Sultan Ibrahim will be continued with debate among the MPs on the second day.
Other matters expected to take centre stage during the session include the economic issues, particularly the falling ringgit and rising cost of living.
