KUALA LUMPUR:Petaling Street, the tourist attraction in the federal capital's Chinatown area is number six among the "coolest" streets in the world.
TimeOut magazine said the thoroughfare boasts some unique eateries and watering holes for people want to spend a night or day out in the city.
It said the vibrant cultural enclave was very popular among tourists and locals. The magazine also said the street was still famous for shoppers who want to go bargain hunting for souvenirs and snacks.
Known officially as 'Jalan Petaling', the area has seen recent improvements and this was among the things that attract people to the area.
"You'll find Kuala Lumpur's oldest temples next door to colonial shophouses housing the newest dining and drinking joints.
"Begin the day with a cuppa and a spot of brunch, cosy up at a resto-bar, and come nightfall there's always a party, whether you're into drum 'n' bass, jazz or reggae.
"At the very intersecting heart of Jalan Petaling, the haggler's haven Chinatown still beats on with stalls peddling everything from snacks to souvenirs," said TimeOut's Kuala Lumpur contributor Ng Su Ann.
The publication highlighted the gastronomical delights one encounters in Petaling Street's restaurants and stalls and cited the Hokkien-style fried noodles, sweet potato balls, and tau foo fah as among the best dishes to try.
TimeOut's rankings were determined by a global team of local expert editors and contributors, who narrowed down the selection to create a definitive ranking of the best streets worldwide.
The magazine listed 30 streets, with High Street in Melbourne topping the list; followed by Hollywood Road in Hong Kong; East 11th Street in Austin, Texas; Guatemala Street in Buenos Aires; Commercial Drive in Vancouver; with Petaling Street in sixth place.
