Dog which chased boy into traffic could be put to sleep, says council

MANJUNG: The authorities have captured a dog which had chased a child and narrowly caused him to be run over by a car in Jalan Haji Mohamad Ali, near Sitiawan here yesterday.

If deemed dangerous, the dog could be put to sleep.

The Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) said its Stray Animals, Licensing and Enforcement Unit had obtained a viral video of the incident, which occurred at 9am.

The 20-second video showed two children running away in panic upon being chased by a white dog.

In the video, recorded by an onlooker, the children were seen dashing across a road in their bid to escape.

One of the children fell down, and was almost run down by a Proton Wira. The driver of the Wira, in swerving, crashed the car onto a road divider.

The council, in a statement, said they took immediate action by capturing the dog under the Dog Licensing Bylaw (Manjung Municipal Council) 1993.

It said their checks showed that the dog was not a stray and has a permit from MPM.

"MPM caught three dogs, including the canine in question, on the same day at 11am over a breach of the terms and conditions of the by-laws.

"The animal's owner had failed to take reasonable steps to ensure that the animal did not cause trouble to neighbours, incessant barking, or take steps to ensure that it did not wander outside its owner's premises," said the council.

MPM said dogs which are deemed dangerous can be put to sleep by the Veterinary Services Department (JPV) based on the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772).

"MPM will refer to the JPV for further action."
