Government's commitment evident in over 13 per cent salary hike for civil servants, says Zahid

JELEBU: The more than 13 per cent increase in civil servant salaries, among the highest ever, reflects the government's commitment to them, says Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid said while this increase is two years overdue according to the government's agreement with civil servants, which mandates a salary review every 10 years, it comes as a relief to them after a long wait.

"The delay was due to changes in previous governments, and today the prime minister's decision brings joy to the civil servants.

"This is among the largest increases so far.

"Despite financial constraints, the prime minister remains committed to appreciating the service of civil servants nationwide," he told reporters at the Jelebu parliamentary and the Umno state liaison body Hari Raya open house here today.

Also present were Jelebu member of parliament and state Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias; Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and Undang Luak Jelebu Datuk Maarof Mat Rashad.

He said that with the salary increase starting in December this year, civil servants are expected to enhance productivity and service performance.

Zahid believes civil servants have no problem doing so and will redouble their efforts in their respective fields.

Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also the Umno president, said the salary increase has nothing to do with the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election or any election gimmicks.

"Today, May 1, is Labour Day, while the by-election is scheduled for May 11, as whatever the government does will always be questioned by certain quarters," he said.

Although Umno is not contesting the by-election, Zahid said the party will still be targeted by others, particularly concerning its relationship with DAP and recent logo-related controversies.

He said that similar issues had arisen during the six state elections last year.

"We believe they are running out of ways to attack Umno, so it is no surprise that many old issues are being recycled.

"On the contrary, we believe there will be changes among Umno voters in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election following Umno's grassroots explanations. Any issues or matters that were previously unclear have been addressed," he said.

Regarding MCA's decision to sit out in the by-election campaign, Zahid said MCA's action is believed to be temporary, and he will continue to meet with MCA leaders regarding the issue.
