KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has taken safety measures to reduce the traffic speed limit on Jalan Lintas in Luyang in an effort to prevent road accidents there.
Last week, some motorists said they were caught by surprise after receiving summonses for inadvertently exceeding the "unannounced" speed limit.
State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the speed limit for the stretch between Lintas Plaza and Luyang Health Clinic would be changed from 80 km per hour (kmph) to 60 kmph.
"The change is prompted by the presence of elevated U-intersections and exit or entry ramps on the road," he said in a statement.
For the stretch of road from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) to Inanam, he said a speed limit of 60 kmph applies along an approximately 870-metre route, starting from the Lido traffic lights junction and ending before the Jalan Kolam/Damai traffic lights junction.
"Similarly, from the direction of Inanam to KKIA, a speed limit of 60 km/h is enforced along an approximately 950-metre stretch starting from the Jalan Kolam/Damai traffic lights intersection and ending before the Lido traffic lights intersection," he added.
Additionally, he said that the existing speed limit still applies on Jalan Lintas, which is designed with an 80 km/h speed limit based on Sabah Public Works Department standards.
He said that road signs indicating the speed limit have been erected since the elevated U-intersection on Jalan Lintas opened to the public in January 2023.
"The public is advised to always obey and be aware of the instructions of the road signs placed on the roadside to prevent road accidents," he said.
