KUALA LUMPUR: Registration for the "Jom Jalan with NPC 2024" walkathon closes tonight.
The inaugural walkathon, aimed at fostering unity and discovering talent is hosted by the National Press Club (NPC) Malaysia and jointly organised by the Federal Territories Kuala Lumpur Athletics Association (FTKLAA).
It will be held at Padang Merbok, here, on June 2 and is open to all ages in two categories — the competitive 10km and leisure 5km race.
Apart from the walkathon, participants can look forward to fitness activities, such as yoga and zumba, and other community-focused engagements.
NPC President Datuk Ahirudin Attan said on NST's Beyond the Headlines that a walkathon was different from the usual association-organised physical activities, such as running, cycling or ironman triathlons.
He said the event aimed to be enjoyable and accessible to all with varying fitness levels.
"Not everyone may be able to run, so the idea of launching this as a 'walk in the park' style is for us to appeal to a broader audience.
"We want the public to see this as an opportunity to foster community spirit and promote the health benefits of walking," he said.
Ahirudin said sponsors were being sought to provide free health screening, including for cancer.
Those interested can register at raceroster.com or Checkpoint Spot.
Corporations interested in sponsoring or participating in Jom Jalan with NPC 2024 can contact club manager Steven Foo at 019-245-8073.
The latest episode of NST's Beyond the Headlines is scheduled for 8pm tonight.
