JOHOR BARU: A prominent Malaysian female kayak athlete was severely injured when a suspected drunk driver crashed into her motorcycle at the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) Highway on Saturday.
Based on viral online dashcam footage, Siti Nurul Masyitah Elias, 22, was dragged about 600 metres by the car that had ploughed into her motorcycle.
Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, confirmed the incident.
A police statement is expected to be released soon.
Meanwhile, the Polytechnic Ibrahim Sultan Mechanical Engineering Department Student Association posted a statement on the matter on their official Facebook page today.
The statement said Siti Nurul Masyitah, a mechanical engineering student is currently admitted at the Colombia Asia Hospital in Iskandar Puteri with serious injuries.
It also said that eyewitnesses and dashcam footage revealed that the car was being driven recklessly before it struck her and dragged her about 600m before it came to a stop.
"Siti Nurul Masyitah frequently travels between Polytechnic Ibrahim Sultan in Pasir Gudang and her home to care for her ailing parents.Her mother suffers from spinal issues due to a previous accident, and her father is in poor health, requiring dialysis treatment.
"We urge everyone to pray for her swift recovery and ease in all her matters," read the statement.
Pictures and footage of the accident have gone viral on social media, including an image of the alleged drunken driver.
Siti Nurul Masyitah had won a bronze medal with the Malaysian Dragon Boat Kayak team at the 2023 SEA Games.
