Over 100 flood victims in Kulim, Bandar Baharu districts evacuated to temporary shelters

KULIM: Over 100 people in Kulim and Bandar Baharu were evacuated to temporary flood relief centers (PPS) after their homes were flooded following several hours of heavy downpour yesterday evening.

In Kulim, 74 victims from 17 families in Kampung Padang Limau, Karangan have been evacuated to a temporary flood relief centre (PPS).

Kulim Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Amirul Aliff Ahmad said Sekolah Agama Ihsaniah Jangkang PPS was activated at 12.12am to provide temporary shelter for the victims.

"Kampung Padang Limau located in Karangan is inundated by a metre-deep floods water following heavy rainfall beginning 5pm yesterday.

"As at 4am, a total of 74 victims comprising of adults and children from 17 families have been evacuated to the PPS," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, in Bandar Baharu, 58 floods victims from 14 families in the Sungai Batu and Selama sub-districts have been evacuated to Masjid Sungai Batu PPS.

Bandar Baharu APM officer Abdul Rahim Kharuddin said the affected villages are Kampung Cherok Meranti and Kampung Sungai Batu in Sungai Batu sub-district and Kampung Sungai Tengas in Selama sub-district.

"The affected areas were flooded after rivers nearby the settlements overflowed following heavy rainfall that lasted over three hours.

"The Masjid Sungai Batu PPS was also activated at 3am to provide temporary shelter for the victims," he said in a statement.
