Bukit Kepong, Pinggiran USJ bloodshed: Previous attacks on police stations

KUALA LUMPUR: The deadly attack by a Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) extremist on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor today, which left two policemen dead, is the latest in a long list of similar incidents.

The New Straits Times revisits past cases involving attacks on police stations.

Feb 23, 1950 - The attack by guerillas from the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA) , the armed wing of the Malayan Communist Party, on the Bukit Kepong police station, remains one of the darkest days in police history. Some 180 MNLA members attacked the station around 5am. Some 25 policemen defended the station for five hours. In the end, 23 police personnel and their families died, with the battle also claiming the lives of 40 attackers.

Oct 16, 1980 - Sixteen devotees of the extremist cult, 'Kumpulan Nur Zaman', launched an attack on the Batu Pahat police station using a variety of weapons including swords. The bloody incident left 23 policemen, civilians and bystanders injured.

March 7, 2012 - An altercation over a helmet allegedly thrown at a group of motorcyclists sparked an assault by 100 villagers on a police station in Teluk Bahang at 11pm. The group were displeased by the police's alleged heavy-handedness in curbing 'mat rempit' activities in the area.

Aug 29, 2016 - A man, livid over supposed inaction by the police regarding burglars who had targeted his aunt's residence, stormed into the Jeram police station brandishing a 'parang' in a fit of rage. Upon entering the station, he confronted policemen at the reception and destroyed two computers, a photocopy machine, and a radio.

July 22, 2017 - Two men hurled a molotov cocktail near the Kuala Muda district police headquarters entrance in an apparent retaliation to the police's ongoing crackdown on 04 Gang in Kedah. Police later found a banner which bore 04 and Nazi logos, warning the police to immediately halt the ongoing crackdown against the underworld gang.

Aug 31, 2017 - Lance Corporal Valentino Mesa, on duty at the Pinggiran USJ police station, was found dead by colleagues at 3.30am after they returned from a routine patrol. He had five slash wounds in the back of the head, and was shot in the back with his own Walther P99 service pistol. The murderer is believed to have fled with the firearm.
