NEW DELHI: A female flight attendant has been arrested for allegedly smuggling nearly 1kg of gold from Muscat, Oman, to Kannur, India, by hiding it in her rectum.
Indian authorities said the woman's tactic was uncovered after an investigation.
They said Surabhi Khatun was detained at Kannur International Airport upon arriving from Muscat on May 28.
"An examination revealed that 960gm of gold were concealed in her rectum.
"The woman was remanded for 14 days," a source told Press Trust of India.
The source said this was the first case of gold smuggling involving crew members.
"An investigation showed that the suspect has smuggled gold several times.
"We are also investigating the involvement of a smuggling group based in Kerala, which is likely connected to these activities."
A representative from the airline did not respond to queries for comment.
