KOTA BARU: When two grandmothers blaze through town on roaring motorcycles, heads are bound to turn.
Mimi Musa, 49, and Nor Hanani Yusof, 43, aren't content to be just passengers. They're confidently piloting their own high-powered bikes, leaving many to marvel at their adventurous spirit.
Instead of watching the world from the back seat, Mimi and Nor Hanani are each commanding their own motorcycles on a journey to their next destination. Their love for biking is more than just a hobby— it's a shared passion with their families and a lifestyle that defies conventional norms.
Mimi's fascination with high-powered motorcycles began early in her marriage to Azman Azhari, 47, a fellow enthusiast.
"I used to ride shotgun with my husband on every convoy," Mimi recalls.
"But three years ago, I got my own beast– a Harley Davidson Street Glide. It's a joy I can't put into words. Sharing this passion with my husband means our car often gathers dust while we hit the road with friends," she chuckled.
Her love for the open road isn't confined to local routes. Mimi frequently ventures into Thailand on her motorcycle, a passion that her children, aged 18 and 27, also embrace.
As a grandmother of two, she finds being a full-time housewife allows her the freedom to join her husband on these thrilling rides whenever they please.
"The thrill begins the moment the engine roars to life," said Mimi, who is also a proud member of the Brotherhood 2Nation motorcycle club.
"There's nothing quite like the sense of freedom and exhilaration we motorcycle lovers experience."
The dynamic duo is currently en route to Melaka to take part in the Malaysia Bike Week at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), a three-day celebration kicking off on June 14 as part of Malaysia Motorcycle Month.
The convoy, comprising 30 bikers, was flagged off yesterday in Tunjong. The event was graced by Yayasan Seri Negara (YSN) patron and former Deputy Inspector-General of Police,
Tan Sri Dr Mazlan Lazim.
Hanani, riding her QJ SRV250 that she bought two years ago, shares the same enthusiasm.
"I used to ride pillion on my husband Mohamad Nor Amin Ahmad's bike," said Nor Hanani, 43, reflecting on her journey with her husband.
"As a passenger, you just sit and often get sleepy on long trips. But when you're the one steering, it's a whole new adventure; challenging but incredibly fun," said the grandmother of two.
