Water supply disruptions in Sepanggar traced to 24 illegal connections cut by JANS

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Water Department (JANS) cut off 24 illegal pipe connections made by residents of the Suang Parai squatter area in Sepanggar.

The illegal pipe connections are one of the causes of water supply disruptions to registered users around Sepanggar.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said earlier this week, JANS once again detected 24 illegal connections from the main pipe near Kampung Suang Parai in Sepanggar.

"Following this, today, JANS enforcement officers sent their team to operate and cut off the illegal pipes.

"The cutting operation is ongoing," he said in a media statement today.

Shahelmey, who is also the state Public Works Minister, said these illegal connections are one of the reasons why the water supply to the main tank of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is affected.

"Currently, JANS enforcement officers are continuously monitoring the situation until the vendor scheme (water supply to squatter residents) is fully implemented in the identified areas," he said.
