Anwar affirms Malaysia-China relations built on mutual respect

KUALA LUMPUR: Addressing questions raised over Malaysia's deepening ties with China, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the relationship is firmly grounded in mutual respect.

He said the ties echoed historical precedents dating back to the emperors of China and the Sultans of Melaka.

In a post on Facebook, Anwar sought to assuage doubts among international observers and fellow Malaysians about the implications of closer bilateral cooperation with China, particularly given Malaysia's smaller size.

"Many of my overseas friends question whether our enhanced bilateral relationship with China could disadvantage Malaysia, especially as we are a smaller nation," Anwar acknowledged.

"I assure that our relationship is rooted in mutual respect."

Highlighting recent discussions with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Anwar Ibrahim said it reaffirmed his belief in the friendly, courteous, and respectful nature of Chinese leadership towards Malaysia.

"Despite the barrage of questions and narratives, especially from the West, I have witnessed a profound understanding and appreciation of cultural differences from our Chinese counterparts," Anwar Ibrahim stated. "Throughout our discussions, there was no hint of arrogance or condescension. We tackled contentious issues as equal partners and trusted friends."

Anwar took the opportunity to reassure the Malaysian public and international community alike that Malaysia's relationship with China is built on genuine respect and friendship. He emphasised Malaysia's commitment to nurturing and strengthening bilateral bonds.

"Our relationship with China reflects genuine respect and friendship," Anwar Ibrahim asserted. "We remain committed to nurturing and strengthening the bonds between Malaysia and China," he said.
