KUALA LUMPUR: A documentary chronicling Admiral Zheng He's historic maritime voyages to Malaysia premiered today, marking a significant milestone in the 50-year relationship between Malaysia and China.
The two-part series, "Zheng He", was jointly launched by National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.
The documentary was produced by the China Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur and the Chinese Bridge Club.
"Admiral Zheng's expeditions brought peace, friendship, and prosperity to neighbouring nations — not war, colonisation, or plunder. His legacy continues to strengthen China-Malaysia relations," said Ouyang during the launch.
Filmed across key historical locations in Melaka, Penang, and Terengganu, the documentary uses cutting-edge multimedia techniques to retrace Zheng He's 15th-century voyages.
These areas were pivotal stops in his expeditions, forging essential trade routes between China and Malaysia.
"This project perfectly aligns with our Madani Harmony initiative, launched in April 2024, which fosters understanding of Malaysia's rich cultural and religious diversity," said Aaron.
Zheng He's maritime missions were not only instrumental in establishing China-Malaysia trade routes but also in building lasting friendships and fostering cultural exchange between the two civilisations.
"Through this project, we are connecting our shared history with future prospects, especially as Malaysia assumes the Asean chair next year, coinciding with the 620th anniversary of Zheng He's voyages," said Chinese Bridge Club chairman Tai Hsiao Hua.
The two episodes, "Embarking on New Horizons" and "Growing Beyond Borders", will be available for global streaming on Facebook via The Interview, the China Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur, and the Chinese Bridge Club platforms.
The first episode will air tomorrow, followed by the second on Dec 27 at 8pm.
