Broken legs, roofs blown off in storm chaos in Perlis, Kedah

KANGAR: A couple on a motorcycle were injured when an uprooted tree fell on them during a storm in Simpang Empat earlier today.

Muhammad Danish Hakim Hanizam, 18, and his wife, Nuraleya Syazreena Roslan Anuar, 18, broke their legs in the 3.15am incident.

Kangar district deputy police chief Superintendent Baeyah Abdul Wahab said the couple were travelling through Kampung Padang Benta during the incident.

"Heavy rain and strong winds hit several areas in Perlis.

"As the couple were passing through Kampung Padang Benta, a tree was fell and hit them," he said today.

He said the couple were taken to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital for treatment and firefighters cleared the uprooted tree.

Another storm victim, Johar, 45, from Simpang Empat, said he was watching a football match as his wife and child slept when strong winds hit.

"About 2.45am, heavy rain and strong winds hit. I thought it was just a normal storm, but the wind intensified, blowing off the roof. My living room was soaked."

He said he was grateful that his wife and child were unharmed.

Checks in Arau and Padang Besar found agencies, including the Civil Defence Force and Fire and Rescue Department, clearing uprooted trees blocking roads.

Perlis Civil Defence Force director Lieutenant-Colonel (PA) Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said by 10am, the agency had recorded 31 cases of uprooted trees and blown-off roofs.

"Only two cases involve trees falling on houses. The rest of the trees fell on roads."

It was reported that 48 homes in Perlis were damaged by storms between Friday and 10.48am today (June 23).

State Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maips) chief executive officer Mohd Nazim Mohd Noor said 37 houses were damaged in today's storm and 11 were affected on Friday (June 21).

He said homes with minor damage would be eligible for aid from the Social Welfare Department, while homes with major damage would be referred to the department to get support from Maips and other agencies.

In Kedah, seven houses in the Kubang Pasu district were damaged by a storm earlier today (June 23).

Kubang Pasu Civil Defence Force officer Captain Mohd Adenin Suhaimi said in the 2.05am incident, trees were uprooted in several areas, including Kampung Kota Si Puteh, Kandis, Pida 2, Teluk Malik, Changkat Setol and Kodiang.
