KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Affairs Ministry is closely monitoring the situation following a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck off the southern coast of Peru.
The ministry, through the embassy of Malaysia in Lima, is keeping a close watch on the situation after the incident that occurred at 12.36am, Lima time, today.
It said the embassy is actively communicating with local authorities to obtain furtherinformation.
Malaysians in the affected areas are urged to stay vigilant and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by the local authorities.

Earlier today Anadolu Agency, citing the US Geological Survey (USGS), reported a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the South Pacific Ocean, 91 kilometres southeast of San Juan de Marcona in Ica, Peru.
The USGS said the tremor occurred in the province of Nazca in the Ica region.
The quake had a shallow depth of 28km and was felt widely in the area.
Following that the Peru Ministry of Health reported that five injured individuals were treated.
Residents in the Ica region and surrounding areas reported intense shaking, although detailed assessments of damage and casualties are still underway, it added.
