'Syed Husin's legacy is indeed significant', says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the late Dr Syed Husin Ali as a close friend and a valuable reference for various matters.

Anwar said he was deeply affected by the loss of Syed Husin.

"I was deeply saddened when I was informed that my friend, thinker, party leader, and also my teacher, Syed Husin Ali, passed away today.

"I am deeply affected as Syed Husin was a very close figure and always a reference point for various pressing matters.

"Condolences to the family of the deceased with prayers for strength and resilience in facing this heavy test," he said in a Facebook post today.

Anwar added that Syed Husin's legacy is indeed significant, extending beyond academic halls and buildings.

He said that as a prominent figure in the field of social sciences, a writer, and a thinker, Syed Husin has left behind a vast and expansive treasure trove of knowledge.

"This is evident from when he shared his passion with Tongkat Warrant (Usman Awang) in past decades, and it is proven through his role as President of Pena.

"His involvement in progressive politics as President of the Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) from 1990-2003, and later as a co-founder and Deputy President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan), further solidified his commitment to the principles of justice and in shaping a better Malaysia.

"My utmost appreciation to Pak Syed for being an extraordinary teacher, mentor, and friend. His fighting spirit will continue to inspire many hearts, and his great legacy will continue to guide the direction and future of the nation."

Earlier, it was reported that Dr Syed Husin Ali, one of PKR's founding members has died today. He was 87 years old.

He was reported to be in critical condition on June 26 and breathed his last in the early hours of this morning.

News of his death was shared by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
