Sungai Bakap polls: No victory parade, Penang police tell party supporters

NIBONG TEBAL: Police have reminded political party supporters not to hold any victory parade to celebrate their candidate in the Sungai Bakap by-election tomorrow.

State police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad reminded them not to engage in any provocations after the announcement of the results tomorrow night.

"Any gathering or procession at any location, whether before, during or after the official counting and announcement of election results, is strictly prohibited.

"Winners are prohibited from making any extraordinary celebrations. It is sufficient to celebrate the victory according to established rules," he said at the Seberang Prai Selatan district police headquarters here today.

Tomorrow, more than 39,000 voters in the state constituency will cast their ballot to choose a new assemblyman. The by-election was triggered following the death of Pas assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24.

The Sungai Bakap by-election will see a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan's Dr Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional's Abidin Ismail.

Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said voters could come out to vote without any worry or fear.

He said the 835 policemen on duty since nomination day on June 22 would monitor the situation and ensure safety. ]

Meanwhile, Hamzah also advised voters against giving their identification cards to others for fear of misuse, sabotage or other purposes by unrelated parties, adding that they should hand them over only to Election Commission (EC) officers at their respective polling centres.

He also urged voters to come out early, especially in the morning, to avoid traffic congestion and unpredictable weather, particularly heavy rain that is expected late in the afternoon.

"Road users are also advised to comply with traffic regulations, especially when at polling stations, and to park their vehicles in designated areas.

"In terms of the traffic police personnel on duty, I believe it is sufficient," he added.
