Policeman hurt in crash while directing traffic in minister's visit

TUMPAT: A police officer was seriously injured in a crash here today while carrying out traffic duties during a visit by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

Tumpat police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie said the victim's motorcycle had crashed into a van in Jalan Kubang Panjang near here.

He said the 28-year-old constable, who was attached to the state police's headquarters, was directing traffic flow when the crash happened around noon.

"The officer was travelling from Kota Baru to Pengkalan Kubor when a van driven by a man in his 50s made a sudden right turn.

"The victim, who was behind him, failed to stop his bike on time and rammed into the driver's door.

"The impact resulted in the officer suffering serious injuries to his leg and thigh," he said.

Khairi said the officer was rushed to Raja Perempuan Zainab II hospital in Kota Baru.
