Media personnel advised against making speculative statements on ongoing cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Media personnel have been advised not to make any statements that extend beyond police investigations concerning ongoing cases.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the murder case of 25-year-old Nur Farah Kartini has prompted various unfounded speculations, leading to public confusion.

"We advise all media practitioners and the public to refrain from speculating about cases that are still under investigation and from disseminating images or information that could disrupt the investigation," he said in a statement today.

He added that under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, anyone can be charged for sharing or spreading false, defamatory, and threatening information.

Offenders can be fined up to RM50,000, imprisoned for one year, or both, if convicted.
