Sources: Azmin turned down offer to become Bersatu secretary-general

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali has reportedly declined an offer by his president to be made the party's secretary-general.

Free Malaysia Today, quoting sources, said the state opposition leader had told several division leaders that he would turn down the offer from Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

"Azmin rejected the post as a matter of principle, saying he wanted to focus on Perikatan Nasional's (PN) goal of wresting Selangor (from Pakatan Harapan) in the next general election.

"But there had been rumours that Azmin was not keen on a 'downgrade'," a source told the online news portal.

The NST has reached out to Azmin for comments.

Bersatu "unveiled" its line-up of top five leaders ahead of its October party polls last Saturday.

Its current secretary-general, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, is likely to rank up to the position of deputy president.

The party also proposed that Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who is deputy president, along with Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee and Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin, be made vice-presidents, and Azmin as Bersatu's secretary-general.
