PM's office allocates RM158,000 to flood-hit Penampang

PENAMPANG: The Prime Minister's Office has allocated RM158,000 to the Penampang constituency following severe flooding there on June 30.

The disaster, which was described as worse than the 1999 flood, had claimed one life and saw hundreds of cars submerged.

The prime minister's senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said the allocation included RM10,000 each to the police, and Fire and Rescue Department.

The rest would be distributed to 138 individuals or households during a ceremony in Penampang Cultural Centre here.

Yesterday, Shamsul had gone to several areas including Penampang together with district officer Francis Chong to survey flooded sites.

"There are certain areas that require immediate action at the federal level, with cooperation from the state in giving early information to people at (flood-prone) sites.

"Even the police station faces (flooding) every year. The repairs cost a lot. For this year, the losses are almost RM700,000," he told reporters.
