Mystery and anxiety as another dog dies of suspected poisoning in Penang

PENANG: Another dog has died of suspected poisoning as mystery surrounds the spate of such cases in Penang.

In the latest case, a dog was found dead at the Linear Park around a condominium in Tanjung Bunga here.

Tanjung Bungah Residents Association (TBRA) deputy chair Agnes James said the latest incident happened this morning.

It is learnt the matter had been raised with the authorities.

"This latest incident brings to about 30 cases of dogs found dead of suspected poisoning recently.

"We hope the authorities will act immediately to put a stop to this incident," she told the New Straits Times today.

On Wednesday, it was reported that 27 dogs died, all believed to be due to poisoning around a condominium in Tanjung Bungah here between July 4 and July 6.

One of the dogs, a 6-year-old Husky named Lilou, was believed to have died after consuming food or grass contaminated with poison near the Mira Residence condominium.

Penang Veterinary Services Department regulatory division head Dr Tishrin Muhamad Ismail said it received complaints about the incident on July 10 and 14.

State Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H'ng Mooi Lye said they had not found any evidence, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings, to assist in their investigation.

He said the authorities would not compromise with any acts of animal abuse and mistreatment; adding that offenders could be charged under the Animal Welfare Act 2015.
