Fishing boat capsizes off Pantai Redang, one victim found drowned

KUALA LUMPUR: Three people were rescued when a Class C fishing boat capsized two nautical miles off Pantai Redang, Sekinchan, on Friday.

However, another victim was found drowned.

Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Captain Maritime Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said they received a report from Sekinchan police station at approximately 4pm yesterday.

The report stated that a class C fishing boat had sunk at around 6am the previous day due to inclement weather, he said.

Abdul Muhaimin said the boat's crew comprised four Indonesian nationals.

"Three of them were rescued by a nearby fishing boat, while one crew member went missing.

"The boat owner was contacted to confirm the incident," he said in a statement.

Following the report, a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was initiated, with the Perkasa 36 boat deployed to the scene to locate the missing individual.

In addition to the MMEA, the SAR operation included assistance from the police, the Fire and Rescue Department; and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM).

A Navtex broadcast was also issued to the Malaysian Marine Department (JLM) and the local maritime community to assist indirectly in the search efforts.

"At approximately 6.15pm yesterday, the Sabak Bernam police station reported finding the missing crew member's body caught in a fishing net in Bagan Sekinchan.

"The body was handed over to the police for further action."

He said the search operation involved around 30 officers and personnel from various agencies and departments, covering a search area of five nautical square miles around the waters of Pantai Sekinchan, Selangor.

"Following the discovery of the body, the SAR operation concluded at 9pm yesterday."
