ALOR STAR: Kedah recorded an improved state cumulative grade point average (CGPA) by 0.04 to 2.88, surpassing the national CGPA of 2.84 for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 2023 examinations.
State Education Department deputy director Mahadhir Ismail said a total of 74 candidates have achieved a CGPA of 4.0 out of a total of 2,981 candidates who sat for the examination last year.
"One candidate from Kedah, Yeoh Cheng Ti from SMK Keat Hwa 1 was selected to receive the best STPM 2023 Student award for science stream from the Malaysian Examinations Council.
"From 74 candidates who achieved 4.0, 59 of them are from the B40 families," he said in a press conference to announce the state results at Sultan Sallehuddin Form Six College here today.
However, he said the number of candidates achieving a CGPA of 4.0 dropped by 0.16 from 84 candidates in 2022.
Mahadhir added that 33 out of 56 STPM examination centres in Kedah surpassed the national average grade.
"There are 2,829 or 99.26 per cent of candidates from public schools who achieved full passing marks compared to 98.62 per cent in the 2022 STPM.
"Meanwhile, 16 examination centres achieved a School Average Grade (GPS) 3.0 compared to 18 centres in 2022. In total, 29 out of 56 examination centres achieved improved GPS," he said.
Mahadhir said 13 subjects recorded an improvement while nine other subjects recorded a downward performance.
"In general, the state Education Department is proud of the STPM 2023 achievement based on the improved state CGPA, a higher number of candidates achieving full passing marks and a higher number of examination centres recording full candidates' passing marks," he said.
