16-year-old who drowned in Besut river was on rare outing with friends

BESUT: The Form Four student who drowned in Sungai Panchor in Hulu Besut yesterday was out for a rare outing with friends when tragedy struck.

The boy's uncle, Wan Mohd Badrul Hisham, said his nephew Muhammad Ikhwan Abdullah, 16, did not usually go out after school.

"Ikhwan, who was the eldest of five siblings, preferred staying at home rather than playing with his friends in the afternoon.

"However, the day before the incident, he went out to swim in a river and went out again yesterday to swim at a different location," he said when contacted today.

Wan Mohd added that the deceased had informed his mother about going out to swim, but his father was worried about his safety because he could not swim.

It is understood that Ikhwan drowned after he entered into the deep end of the river.

"His body was then found by a member of the public," Wan Mohd said.

He said Ikhwan, who was a quiet and helpful person, was buried in Hulu Besut today.
