Visually impaired get tips from cops on keeping online scammers at bay

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 50 visually impaired individuals received advice from the police today on not falling prey to crime including online scams.

The crime prevention talk, organised by Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Malaysian Association for the Blind, was launched by the Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood.

Ku Mashariman said the talk was aimed at increasing awareness of online scams among the group.

He said it would ensure that they were more cautious and avoid falling victim to scammers.

"Most persons with disabilities (PwDs), including those who are visually impaired, are easily influenced (by online scams). This is why we provide them with advice, so that they do not become too gullible."

Ku Mashariman warned that there were criminals who would exploit them to commit crimes through scam calls and other means.

He said this when met by reporters after the talk, which was held together with the 'Be Safe, Feel Safe' programme today.

Asked whether the Brickfields district police had received reports on online scams involving the visually impaired, Ku Mashariman said there were no reports so far this year.

He, however, said the police had received reports on other offences involving the visually impaired group.

"There are no reports yet on scammers this year, but we do receive reports on other crimes.

"However, we are focusing more on scams. The trend of online scams is under control, but we want to stop any threat of online scams towards these vulnerable groups."
