Additional RM100 million allocation for northern border security to boost safety, investment : Experts

ALOR STAR: Experts have lauded the government's decision to allocate an additional RM100 million to strengthen northern border security.

The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, aims to enhance facilities at the country's entry points in Kelantan, Kedah, and Perlis.

Universiti Utara Malaysia international affairs and political analyst Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani said increased funding is crucial for the country's efforts to combat cross-border crimes and security threats.

He said the move also serves as a signal to foreign investors, demonstrating the government's commitment to bolstering national security and making the country a more attractive destination for investment.

"Numerous issues related to drug trafficking, human trafficking, and the smuggling of goods such as subsidised petrol can be effectively addressed.

"Malaysia must also show a serious commitment to tackling smuggling and trafficking issues to instill confidence in the country's security. This will further attract investors to Malaysia," he said when contacted today.

Earlier, Anwar said he plans to meet with Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to discuss border security and plan economic development in the northern region of the peninsula and southern Thailand.

Anwar also ordered the state government and the relevant local authorities to expedite the enhancement of facilities in Malaysia-Thailand borders in the three states.

Meanwhile, UUM national security analyst Dr Mohamad Faisol Keling said  border security can be addressed by reassessing the soft target concept set by the government.

"The government can designate border areas and small towns along the border as soft targets. In fact, to regulate, the government already has agencies, facilities, and manpower to carry out tasks. This method is more economical and can increase effectiveness in ensuring national security.

He added that identifying specific threats can help to address border security challenges effectively.

"By focusing on specific groups, the government can increase law enforcement effectiveness while saving national expenditure," he added.
