RTD to summon parents of 12-year old boy on joyride in car with siblings

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will summon the parents of the 12-year-old boy who was caught on video going for a joyride in a car with his two younger siblings in Taman Putra Impiana, Puchong, Selangor.

Its director-general, Aedy Fadly Ramli said a notice has been issued to the parents to assist in  an RTD investigation.

"I was informed that the police have acted on the case but at RTD we will also carry out our own investigation on the matter.

"We have issued a notice to the parents, who are also the vehicle owners. However, we will let police complete their investigation first, and after that, we will investigate according to the provisions of Road Transport Act 1987," he said during a press conference a the Integrated Operation for Foreign Drivers (Ops PeWA) event today.

Yesterday, a one-minute and 49-second video went viral showing a woman stopping a Perodua Viva car driven by a young boy, with two children inside.

In the video, the car was seen driven fast over a speed bump in front of a house before the woman directed the driver to stop.

Sepang district police chief ACP Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said police have recorded a statement from the children's father, and the case is being investigated under Section 39(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Aedy said the parents will be fined for allowing their child to drive without a licence and will also  be given counselling.

"I advise parents to always supervise their children to ensure they do not use the vehicles parked at home, do not drive, or ride on the road without a valid license.

"This is the role and responsibility of parents because we never know; sometimes children have the skills to drive, but they are actually not qualified, and cant drive properly.

"So we advise parents to keep an eye on their children at all times and not to allow them to drive without a licence," he said.
