KUALA LUMPUR: The cabinet has condemned the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran today.
In a statement, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government was in solidarity with Palestinians over Haniyeh's death.
"The cabinet expresses our condolences to the family of the late Haniyeh, who was the former prime minister of Palestine.
"We urge that an immediate investigation be carried out to ensure those responsible for the murder are brought to justice.
"The Malaysian government will continue to voice strong support and cooperate with other countries in efforts to demand the liberation of the Palestinian people from any form of oppression," said Fahmi, who is the unity government spokesman.
Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of Haniyeh, head of the Hamas group, stressing that an investigation is underway.
In a statement, ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani expressed condolences over "the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh to the proud nation of Palestine".
He stressed that an "investigation into the details of this incident by the relevant institutions of the Islamic Republic of Iran" is underway.
